## Short answer

The clearest difference is the shape over time and how they react when you slow down. Real interest grows as two people learn about each other. Love bombing peaks at the front door, with huge words, big plans and constant contact in the first weeks. To tell them apart, slow the pace on purpose and say you like taking your time. A person with real interest relaxes into that, maybe with a little disappointment. Someone running a fast start gets hurt, pushes harder, sulks or goes cold. Their reaction to your pace tells you more than any compliment.

**Love bombing and real interest, side by side**

| What to watch | Love bombing | Real interest |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shape over time | Peaks at the front door, then fades or turns hot and cold | Grows as two people learn about each other |
| When you say you'd like to slow down | Gets hurt, pushes harder, sulks or goes suddenly cold | Relaxes into it, maybe a little disappointed |
| Big words like 'I've never felt this way' | Early, often, and used to set a fast pace | Something like 'I really like you. I'm excited to see where this goes.' |
| Talk about the future | Vivid plans early, small follow-through now | Plans that grow out of small promises already kept |
| Sharing secrets | Fast disclosure, then a hint that you owe the same | Opens up with no pressure for you to match |
| Your friends | 'Your friends don't really get us' | May not click with a friend, still wants them in your life |
| Hearing a small no | Coldness, blame or asking again until you give in | Accepts it and adjusts |

## Reading the love bombing signs in the table

Read the rows from the top. The first two matter most.

The first row is the shape. In the book's words, real interest grows, and love bombing peaks at the front door. A flood of messages, gifts, plans and big words in week one is not proof of anything bad. Lots of people fall hard. But a feeling that arrives fully grown hasn't had time to be about you yet.

The second row is the test. You don't have to guess what someone means. You can change one thing, your pace, and watch. The book's line for this is warm and short:

> "That's sweet. I like you too, and I like taking my time."

If they say they knew you were the one that first night, and ask what you are even waiting for, the book's reply is just as calm:

> "I'm glad you feel that way. I'm going to keep my own timeline."

The other rows are things you notice over weeks, not in one evening. Plans that keep getting bigger while today stays small. Secrets shared fast, then a hint that you owe the same. A gentle wedge between you and your friends.

## Why the fast start works so well

Speed builds a bond before your judgment catches up. It also builds a debt. After so much warmth, pulling back feels rude. And the flood lowers your guard at the exact moment you would normally be most careful.

It can be hard to see because it feels like being understood. A [2021 study by Heym and colleagues](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.paid.2020.110172) found a group of people with dark traits and real empathy at once. They can read you very well. So feeling seen is not the same as being safe. We are not saying anyone you date fits that group. We are saying the warm feeling is not the test. Your pace is.

## Eleven days in

Picture Nate. He's thirty-four and has been on the apps for a year. Then he matches with Caleb.

Caleb texts good morning before Nate's alarm goes off. By the second date he knows Nate's coffee order and the name of his sister's kid. On the fourth date, over tacos, Caleb puts down his fork. He has never felt like this. Not once. He thinks Nate is it.

Nate feels lit up. He also feels a small tug he can't name. It's been eleven days.

Three months later, Caleb has a key. Nate's trivia night is gone, because Caleb gets a weird feeling about those guys. Some nights Caleb is the warmest person Nate has known. Other nights he doesn't answer for a day and a half.

Nate isn't foolish. The sentences just arrived in the right order, at the right speed. The small tug on day eleven was the signal. The slowness test is how you listen to it.

## What if they mean every word?

Many people ask this, and it is a fair question. Love bombing is not always a cold plan. The book says plenty of people use the big lines from a fast start and mean them, especially in the rush of a new crush. The same move also shows up outside dating, at the start of a new job or a business deal.

That is why we don't ask you to judge what is in their heart. You can't see it. You can see what happens next. Someone who means it can still hear that you like taking your time, and wait. If every slower step gets an argument, a sulk or a cold day, the speed is doing a job, whether they planned it or not.

## Are they just nice, or are you seeing flags that aren't there?

This cuts both ways. The book calls it confirmation bias. If you like someone, your mind files away the warning signs. The late reply was a fluke, the lie was a mix-up. If you have just read about manipulation, the opposite happens. A kind text starts to look like a tactic.

The book's fix is to ask for the other side. After any strong judgment, ask yourself what evidence you are ignoring that points the other way. If you keep notes on someone new, add a column for evidence against your theory. One warm person who also respects your no is just a warm person.

## If it already feels like more than a fast start

Some signs mean this is past a dating question. You check their mood before you speak. They track where you go or demand to see your phone. Your circle of friends keeps shrinking, with a reason each time. Jealousy comes with anger that scares you.

If any of that is true, the book's advice is to skip the tests and get help. The [National Domestic Violence Hotline](https://www.thehotline.org) is free and confidential: 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.

## The book that walks you through it

This is the problem [The Manipulator's Phrasebook](/books/the-manipulators-phrasebook) was written for.

**Dating and Love** opens with a section called The fast start, four lines from the first weeks, each with an honest version and a reply. It goes on through the slow squeeze, the cold and the warm, and what people say when you try to leave.

**Twelve Moves With Names** explains love bombing, future faking and the hot-and-cold cycle, with an antidote for each.

**The First Thirty Days** turns all of this into a private scored card for anyone new, with five gentle tests and a promise log. Green means relax and enjoy the person. If the talk keeps turning into you doubting your own memory, see our page on [what to say when someone gaslights you](/guides/what-to-say-when-someone-gaslights-you).

## FAQ

### What is the difference between love bombing and genuine interest?

Real interest builds slowly and deepens as you learn each other. Love bombing arrives at full strength in the first days, with lines like never having felt this way before, early talk of a shared future, and pressure to commit now. The best sign is how they take a slower pace from you.

### How soon does love bombing start?

Right at the start, often in the first days or weeks. That is the point of it. Commitments made early get made before you have seen the person tired, stressed or hearing a no. By the time you know those things, you may already be tied in.

### What do you say to someone who is love bombing you?

Something warm and slow, such as saying you like them too and you like taking your time. Then watch what happens. You don't need to accuse them of anything. A healthy person respects your pace. The reaction is your answer.

### Is it love bombing if they talk about the future a lot?

Not by itself. Dreaming out loud is one of the real joys of love. It becomes a flag when the dreams keep getting bigger while the follow-through stays small. Keep a private log of concrete promises and check it at day 30. If two of the first three were missed, that is a serious flag.

### What happens after love bombing?

Often a hot-and-cold cycle. Some days the person is the warmest you have known, then they go cold for no clear reason. The book compares it to a slot machine: the good days keep you waiting. Score your last ten real talks from one to five and decide by the average.

### Is it love bombing if they really mean it?

It can be real. The book says plenty of people say big things and mean them, especially in the rush of a new crush. So the words alone do not decide it. What decides it is what happens after you ask for a slower pace. A person who means it can wait. Someone using the speed to get ahead of your judgment cannot.
